Now 46, Emily offers up her body for various drug trials in service of the grand family endeavor – the research project working towards finding a cure for familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the heritable form of ALS. Though Emily is the only one of their generation identified as a carrier of the gene, they are all haunted by the knowledge that it could strike any one of them, which is why they are throwing millions at the scientists. 

But there is a problem at the heart of the research project, a problem that a senior researcher cannot ignore any longer. He decides he has to speak to Emily to tell her what he knows….
